The Army (ADP 1)

The Army Mission

The Army's mission must be known verbatim: 'To deploy, fight, and win our Nation’s wars by providing ready, prompt, and sustained land dominance by Army forces across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the joint force.'

Strategic Roles of the Army

• ADP 1 defines four strategic roles of the Army:
• Shape operational environments: Security cooperation, deterrence, and forward presence.
• Prevent conflict: Demonstrate capability and resolve to deter adversaries.
• Prevail in large-scale ground combat: Fight and win when armed conflict is necessary.
• Consolidate gains: Ensure that tactical success translates into lasting strategic success and stability.

The Army also provides Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) during domestic emergencies.

The Army Profession

• The Army Profession is a trusted vocation of Soldiers and Army civilians. It is built on five essential characteristics:
• Trust (The bedrock of the profession)
• Honorable Service
• Military Expertise
• Stewardship
• Esprit de Corps
