Army Fitness Test (AFT)

The AFT replaced the ACFT effective June 1, 2025. Know the 5 events, scoring standards, and combat vs general standards.

AFT Overview

The Army Fitness Test (AFT) is the Army's test of record for physical fitness, effective June 1, 2025. It replaced the ACFT. The Standing Power Throw was eliminated due to injury risk and correlation with height rather than fitness. The AFT now consists of 5 events with a maximum score of 500 points.

The 5 Events

  1. Three Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL): Tests muscular strength. Heaviest weight lifted 3 times.
  2. Hand-Release Push-Up with Arm Extension (HRP): Tests muscular endurance. Full extension, release hands, extend arms to the side, push back up.
  3. Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC): Tests agility, anaerobic endurance, and muscular strength. 5x50m shuttle with sprints, sled drag, lateral shuffle, carry, and sprint.
  4. Plank (PLK): Tests core strength and endurance. Hold the plank position for maximum time.
  5. Two-Mile Run (2MR): Tests aerobic endurance.

Scoring Standards

Each event is scored 0-100 points. Maximum total: 500 points.

  • Combat Standard: Applies to 21 designated combat MOSs. Sex-neutral, age-normed. Minimum 60 per event, 350 total. Takes effect Jan 1, 2026 (Active), Jun 1, 2026 (Reserve/Guard).
  • General Standard: All other MOSs. Performance-normed by gender and age. Minimum 60 per event, 300 total.

ACFT scores recorded before May 31, 2025 remain valid for promotions until Sept 30, 2025.

Body Composition – AR 600-9

  • The Army Body Composition Program (AR 600-9) establishes standards for body fat and screening weights. Soldiers who exceed screening weight are taped. Maximum body fat:
  • Male: 20-26% (varies by age)
  • Female: 30-36% (varies by age)
  • Soldiers who fail are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP).

Board Tips

Know all 5 AFT events (NOT 6 — the Standing Power Throw was removed). Know both the Combat Standard (350/sex-neutral) and General Standard (300/gender-normed). The name change from ACFT to AFT is current as of June 2025. Board members may ask: 'What changed from the ACFT to the AFT?' Answer: SPT removed, now 5 events, max 500, and new combat MOS standards.
