Types of Leave

• Ordinary Leave: Chargeable leave granted at the Soldier's request (30 days accrued per year, max 60 days carried over).
• Emergency Leave: Chargeable leave granted due to a personal or family emergency.
• Convalescent Leave: Non-chargeable leave granted by a medical authority for recuperation.
• Transition Leave (formerly Terminal Leave): Chargeable leave used in conjunction with separation or retirement.
• Permissive TDY (PTDY): Non-chargeable administrative absence for house hunting, job interviews before separation, etc.
• Military Parental Leave Program (MPLP): 12 weeks non-chargeable for birth and non-birth parents following a qualifying birth, adoption, or long-term foster placement.

Passes

• Regular Pass: A period when a Soldier is excused from duty (usually a weekend). Not chargeable as leave.
• Special Pass: Up to 4 days (3-day or 4-day pass) granted by the commander as a reward or for special circumstances.
• Passes are a privilege, not a right. Commander may revoke at any time.

Board Tips

Know the governing regulation: AR 600-8-10. Know the difference between chargeable and non-chargeable leave. Know that Soldiers earn 2.5 days of leave per month. Know that leave is now requested via an Absence Request in IPPS-A, not a DA Form 31. If asked about emergency leave, know that Red Cross verification is typically required for overseas Soldiers.
