Suicide Prevention (ACE Program)

Army suicide prevention — ACE method, warning signs, and response procedures.

The ACE Method

A – Ask: Ask the Soldier directly, 'Are you thinking about killing yourself?' Do not use vague terms like 'hurting yourself.' Asking directly does NOT increase the risk of suicide.

C – Care: Show genuine concern. Calmly control the situation, listen actively without judgment, and remove any potential means of self-harm if possible.

E – Escort: Never leave a suicidal Soldier alone. Escort them directly to the chain of command, a Chaplain, Behavioral Health, or an emergency room.

Warning Signs

  • Talking about being a burden or having no reason to live
  • Increased alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and activities
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Drastic changes in mood or behavior
  • Hopelessness about the future
  • Previous suicide attempts (strongest predictor)
